RedHawks complete sweep of Sioux Falls

FARGO – For his first season in the bullpen, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks relief pitcher Danny Gutierrez couldn’t have picked a better test than Wednesday versus Sioux Falls. Bases loaded, no outs and the RedHawks clinging to a two-run lead. In came Gutierrez and down went the Canaries, as Gutierrez got a strikeout, sacrifice fly and – after a walk to load the bases – a lineout to give the RedHawks an 8-7 win and a three-game series sweep of the Canaries in front of 4,081 at Newman Outdoor Field.

“You have to be ready,” Gutierrez said. “You never know when it’s your time. I hung that last one, but luckily we had someone there.”

Fargo-Moorhead (35-23) pitching coach Steve Montgomery is positive he will not be refusing to bring in relief pitcher Joe Harris despite the two now being tied for fourth in appearances in RedHawks history with 100 after Wednesday night. Harris made No. 100 count, getting the win to move to 7-3 on the season.

“He’s a big part of what we do here,” Montgomery said. “He’ll be passing me by a long shot. Hopefully, he’ll play a few more years because we really depend on him. I’ve seen a lot of guys pass me in a lot of things.”

Harris was happy to hear that because he’s hoping for 100 more appearances.

“I actually didn’t know it was my 100th appearance after I got pulled,” Harris said. “It’s pretty special. Not many people get to say they made 100 professional appearances. I’d love for 100 more, but that isn’t up to me.”

Unlike the weather, Fargo-Moorhead pitcher Paul Burnside did not start off so hot, as the first four Sioux Falls hitters reached base. Cory Morales – the second batter of the game – drove in Nick Van Stratten with a double and Marcos Rodriguez drove in Morales with a single to put the Canaries up 2-0 without an out being recorded. Burnside would get one out in the fourth inning before Harris was called upon.

The RedHawks answered in the bottom of the third. After a groundout to lead off the inning, the RedHawks had four consecutive singles, including one from C.J. Retherford that drove in Ronnie Bourquin to cut the Sioux Falls lead to 2-1. Keith Brachold tied it up with a sacrifice fly.

Then the RedHawks got some help from Canaries second baseman Anthony Trajano.

Trajano dropped a fielder’s choice at second base that should have ended the inning, but instead allowed Retherford to cross the plate to give the RedHawks the lead. Trajano mishandled a rocket off the bat of Buddy Sosnoskie, which was scored a single, allowing Tim Alberts to score and then threw the ball into the RedHawks dugout, plating Mitch Einertson to put the RedHawks up 5-2.

Sioux Falls got one back the next inning when Van Stratten was able to beat Burnside to first base on a double-play attempt with one out. The Canaries made it 5-4 on a two-out single from J.P. Ramirez in the seventh, but the RedHawks answered in the bottom half. Zach Penprase was hit by a pitch to start the inning, got second on a balk and stole third before Bourquin drove him in with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. Nic Jackson and Retherford crossed the plate later in the inning when Morales threw the ball away on a double-play attempt to make it 8-4.

Sioux Falls added two runs in the eighth before Gutierrez shut the door in the ninth.
