Lightning strikes: First-time director Domres lets ideas roll on ‘Grease’
The 28-year-old tackles “Grease,” opening Friday night for a three-week run at North Dakota State University’s Festival Concert Hall.
The musical isn’t the problem – he picked it because it’s an audience favorite. It’s what Domres wants to do with the blockbuster. He has big ideas, but a small budget.
Luckily, he has a creative mind.
Domres recently filmed his actors around town and at Rothsay High School. The silent footage will roll throughout the play in the back-
ground, allowing a little more character exposition than the script gives.
“ ‘Grease’ doesn’t really lend itself to emotional moments. So, to bring the audience into the characters a little more intimately, we can do that through the use of film,” he explains, adding that the images will roll on a 10-foot by 50-foot screen.
“That really allows us to jump into their mind and their emotions more than the regular stage allows us to,” he says.
