Moorhead High School looking to update football fieldMOORHEAD – Moorhead is looking to make some changes to Jim Gotta Stadium.
After deciding the track around the football field needs replacing, Moorhead Area Public Schools superintendent Lynne Kovash decided to look around further.
“The track is really falling apart,” Kovash said. “The track needs to be replaced. When you look at the track being replaced, you’ve got to kind of look around.”
After looking around, Kovash and the Moorhead school board thought perhaps the football field could be updated and soccer fields could be moved from Horizon Middle School to the high school.
“We’re looking at the fields and the track,” Kovash said. “This is just looking at and doing some exploratory work. We have the soccer fields over at the middle school. Can we bring the soccer fields to the high school? Can we have the soccer fields there as well as the football field with the track around it? Can we do a multi-purpose type of thing? We are not sure. This is just the discussion we had.”
Kovash was adamant that the Moorhead school board was not proposing a new stadium, but rather looking for upgrades.
“We are looking at how we can replace the track and what we can do with the field,” Kovash said. “Our stadium is probably 12 years old. It’s always time to update and making sure the best is there. We also want the space to be used for physical education classes, not just for a Friday night football game, but how can we use this for physical education classes for students?”
There are no positive dates or dollar amounts for the changes, but Kovash said a plan would be in place within the next few months.
“We will probably, within the next few months, bring a plan to the board,” Kovash said. “We want to find out where the board is with this and where we want to go.”
