United Way seeks school supply donations

FARGO – United Way of Cass Clay wants to provide 4,500 children with backpacks and school supplies this year through its 15th annual school supplies drive.

The drive kicks off today.

Last year, the drive outfitted 4,599 children from 53 schools and community organizations, said Kristina Hein, the agency’s marketing director.

“Our goal is to equip as many students as we can,” Hein said. “We know that needs are going up. We work very closely with our school districts.”

About 83 percent of the students who received supplies last year were enrolled in the federal free and reduced lunch program, which aids low-income families, United Way reported.

Among the supplies most needed are new backpacks (no wheels), pencil pouches, scissors, 1-inch three-ring binders, and markers and colored pencils.

Also needed are erasers and pens (blue, black and red), two-pocket folders, notebooks (college- and wide-ruled), loose-leaf paper, highlighters, 24-count boxes of crayons, glue in bottles or sticks, and rulers.

Donation locations

Supplies can be dropped off through Aug. 2 at West Acres Regional Shopping Center; Moorhead Center Mall; all Wal-Mart, Gate City Bank and First International Bank and Trust locations; Great North Insurance Services, 675 13th Ave. E., Suite 101, West Fargo; and United Way of Cass Clay, 219 7th St. S., Fargo.

The supplies will be distributed from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 10 and 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Fargodome, 1800 N. University Drive.

Hein said monetary donations are welcome, too.

She said the agency, by buying in bulk, can bring the cost of outfitting a student down to about $15, whereas moms and dads may typically spend $25 to $35 buying similar supplies for their children.

Monetary donations can be given by credit card on the agency’s website, www.unitedwaycassclay.

org, by calling the Fargo office at (701) 237-5050, or by mailing a check to UWCC, PO Box 1609, Fargo, ND 58107.

Volunteers are needed to organize and distribute backpacks and supplies. People interested in helping can register to volunteer on the United Way website, call the agency, or follow links on the United Way of Cass Clay Facebook page.

Hein said the agency is willing to pick up donations of school supplies or cash from area businesses.

Any Cass County student in grades kindergarten through 12 is eligible to receive school supplies.

Registration forms are available at the United Way office, on the agency’s website or on distribution days at the Fargodome.

Each child must have a registration form and a form of identification to receive supplies.
