Glyndon man faces attempted murder charges in Moorhead domestic incident
“I dialed 911, my brother said, ‘get out of here,’” said Manuel Martinez, the older brother of stabbing victim Victor Martinez, 21, of his brother’s attempt to intervene in the domestic assault they saw taking place in the 3000 block of 16th Avenue. “[Then] I saw my brother getting stabbed.”
Angel Maldonado, Jr., 24, of Glyndon, Minn., is being held on suspicion of attempted murder after police say he stabbed Martinez, of Eagle Pass, Texas, and Maldonado’s girlfriend following a physical altercation between the couple early Saturday morning.
Manuel Martinez said Maldonado and his girlfriend had been in the neighborhood before the fight that broke out between the pair about 2:30 a.m.
Martinez’s mother and his younger brother Victor were in town from Texas visiting him at his new home here in Moorhead when Victor Martinez tried to step in and stop the domestic dispute.
Police said Maldonado threw a tire iron/car jack handle at his girlfriend, puncturing her back and creating what police called a “life-threatening” injury.
Maldonado afterward allegedly stabbed the intervening Victor Martinez at least three times in the torso with a serrated steak knife, according to the police report.
By the time police arrived in response to the disturbance call at 3025 16th Avenue south, Manuel Martinez had his brother in the car and was speeding with him toward the emergency room.
“They pulled me over going 50 in a 30 zone,” said Martinez. “On the way there, I thought I was going to lose him a couple of times.”
Martinez said the officer who pulled him over helped get his brother to Sanford Hospital, where both victims underwent emergency surgery.
“It was a very serious assault,” Moorhead Police Lt. Tory Jacobson said.
Maldonado was allegedly knocked unconscious during the fight with Martinez, Jacobson said. He is currently under observation at the hospital.
Maldonado will face attempted murder charges pending a complaint to the Clay County Attorney’s Office. He has a prior felony domestic assault conviction from 2007.
