Letter: Forum suicide report excellentThank you so much for the excellent work The Forum did in covering the sad story of the young man who threatened suicide, was chastised for it by a law enforcement officer, and then did take his own life.
I have battled clinical depression, bipolar disorder and alcoholism for all of my life. Believe me, suicide has been on the table as an option hundreds of times. In 1969 I came within seconds of pulling the trigger. Whenever I hear of anyone taking their life, my mind is flooded with all kinds of emotions, one being regret that I did not complete the act. I was a master at putting on a happy face.
The Forum did a very good job in listing some signs. Hopefully people will take time to consider these and apply them. My loving family and a great psychiatrist keep watch over me. My faith in God is so important, however, we need people tuning into our moods and feelings.
I worked for 16 years in the field of rehabilitation and saw four of my clients take their lives. The hurt they went through prior to this action is a hurt that would rival the pain felt in any disease. I have a tremendous amount of empathy for those people, for those considering suicide as they read this letter, and for all families and friends of these individuals.
To The Forum: Please keep on educating us on mental health issues.
