Kolpack: Putting a spin on promotion for Bison blog

Fargo - The email regarding FCS football came across the inbox this morning like so many of them in the last month. It was The Sports Network, announcing its “Watch List” for the Buck Buchanan Award.

Two North Dakota State players made the cut for the honor that goes to the best defensive player in the subdivision: linebacker Grant Olson and cornerback Marcus Williams. These lists essentially don’t mean much, but I can’t blame TSN for putting it together. It gives the website another avenue to promote its product.

So, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

Coming to an email inbox near you: The Bison Media Blog 2013-14 Media Person of the Year “Watch List.” Here are the semifinalists:

Dom Izzo, WDAY. He probably should be ineligible since he’s half of the Media Blog, but I make the rules. Nobody puts his heart and soul into his work like the Pride of Oswego (N.Y.). He started a daily countdown to the NDSU at Kansas State season-opening football game starting with No. 99, which can be found at http://bisonmedia.areavoices.com. What he didn’t tell me is I’m responsible for a big chunk of them, too. On Thursday, I struggled with No. 50. Thanks Dom.

Mike McFeely, KFGO. This might cause the oldest golfer to ever try and make the All-City golf tournament championship flight to yip a putt today, but the talk show host is due for an Ed Schultz, national notoriety moment. Just what it is, we’ll see. At the least, just getting his name in print reminds us of the days of McFooly writing for the Fool ’em.

Beth Hoole, KVLY. She’s been Miss Personality shooting video at games over the past year, but now the University of Nebraska groupie is on the firing line as a weekend anchor. We’ll see if she can handle the immense pressure and scrutiny of being on the Media Blog Watch List. I bet she folds like Tim Miles in an MMA ring.

Eric Peterson, The Forum. I’ve groomed him, molded him, shaped him in this business over the years. He’s been at his best in the last year, and now the Pride of Climax, Minn., has started an internet show on Inforum.com called “The Yet To Be Named Sports Roundtable.” I can only hope I’m worthy enough to be on it someday.

Scott Miller, Radio Fargo Moorhead. The man is more holistic than the Dalai Lama, more giving than Mother Teresa and nicer than Ward Beaver. But I think it’s time the Voice of the Bison finds his inner Eddie Schultz and starts a verbal war with South Dakota State because this so-called rivalry could use some NDSU-UND Fire and Ice.

Trevor Peterson, WDAY. This could be a big year for Trev now that Forum Communications has the North Dakota High School Activities Association television contract. A Fargo North graduate with that savvy veteran prep knowledge, Trev is a good bet to be a huge part of the basketball state tournaments telecasts.
