Weather Talk: This June seventh-wettest in Fargo-Moorhead recordsDue largely to three big rainfalls late in the month, June 2013 is now the seventh-wettest June on record for Fargo-Moorhead.
The gauge at Hector International Airport received 1.76 inches the night after June 20. There was another 0.92 of an inch on June 23. Then, with the ground fully saturated, an additional 3.96 inches fell on the night following June 25. Those three rains amounted to 6.64 inches of the 7.73-inch total for the month.
May was also wet, with the 7.16 inches ranking in fourth place for wettest May months. The combination of May and June rainfall was 14.89 inches, which is the wettest combined May-June period on record.
The record for June rainfall is 11.71 inches set in 2000. The second-wettest June was 9.40 inches set in 1975. Not surprisingly, both of those wet Junes were associated with flooding far more extensive and expensive than the flooding caused by this year’s rains.
