Kristo talks about trade

Danny Kristo was sitting by a lake next to friends T.J. Oshie and Evan Trupp on Tuesday afternoon, oblivious to the fact that his future had been re-arranged.

His agent tried to reach him. So did Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin and New York Rangers GM Glen Sather.

“When I got back to my phone, I had missed calls, so I started calling them back,” said Kristo, who then found out he had been traded from the Canadiens to the Rangers. “I was surprised. There had been some rumors going on at the draft that maybe I was going to get traded. I know Montreal wanted to move up picks in the draft. But to go two days after the draft was surprising.”

Kristo, who just completed a four-year career at UND, said he thanked Bergevin for the organization’s support over the past few years and the general manager wished him luck in the future.

Then, the former UND star called his new boss, Sather. Their conversation made Kristo eager for the upcoming season.

“He sounded really excited and he said he was really fired up. He said they had been trying to get me for a little bit. That was awesome to hear.”

Kristo planned to live in Montreal for a month this summer. He’s now not exactly sure about the plan for the rest of the summer. Kristo just knows he will be in New York at some point.

“I’ve never been there,” Kristo said, “but I heard it is a little bit bigger than Grand Forks.”

Kristo said he’s also excited for the possibility of playing with Derek Stepan, his linemate at the 2009 World Junior Championship. That American squad won gold.

“I better be ready to go right away,” Kristo said. “I’m going to work hard and hopefully I can make the roster out of camp.”

Recruits, Bittner named to team

Three UND recruits and Crookston native Paul Bittner were named to the U.S. Under-18 team that will competing in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in August.

The UND recruits are forwards Nick Schmaltz and Austin Poganski and defenseman Ryan Mantha.

The roster is comprised of the top 1996-born players who are not training with the National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Bittner plays for the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Hockey League.

Toews named all-star

Former UND standout Jonathan Toews is on the NHL All-Star team.

Toews, who led the Chicago Blackhawks to their second Stanley Cup in four years, was named the second-team center on Wednesday when the teams were announced.

Toews finished fifth in the NHL with 23 goals in 47 games. He had 48 points and registered a plus-27 rating.

The Winnipeg native won the Selke Trophy last month as the top defensive forward in the NHL.

• When NHL free agency opens Friday, former UND players Chris VandeVelde, Jason Gregoire and Mike Commodore will be on the market as unrestricted free agents. Brad Malone of the Colorado Avalanche is restricted.
