Gabrielle Giffords to visit Fargo on Wednesday

BISMARCK – Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will be in Fargo on Wednesday during a weeklong tour calling for common-sense gun safety laws.

Giffords will speak during the Rights and Responsibilities Tour hosted by Americans for Responsible Solutions, an advocacy committee created by Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, after Giffords was shot in the head in January 2011 in Tucson, Ariz.

According to the tour’s website, Giffords and Kelly will hold a 3 p.m. forum at Atomic Coffee, 222 Broadway No. 100, doors open at 2:45 p.m.

The group was formed, “to encourage elected officials to stand up for common-sense solutions to prevent gun violence and protect responsible gun ownership,” according to the groups website.

The tour’s website says it will mobilize, “an unlikely coalition of supporters to call for the immediate passage of common-sense gun safety laws,” which 90 percent of Americans support.

According to the tour’s website, 79 percent of North Dakotans support background checks and 69 percent of North Dakotans believe that it is possible to protect gun rights and strengthen gun laws.

The seven-state tour begins in Las Vegas today and will stop in Fargo on Wednesday, ultimately ending in Raleigh, N.C., on July 7.

“The tour reminds us the week of Independence Day that with rights come equally important responsibilities: We can celebrate responsible gun ownership and promote common-sense gun safety laws that protect our communities from gun violence,” the tour’s website says.
