Car crash causes $20K in damage at Asian grocery

FARGO – A person leaving a Main Avenue grocery store here caused about $20,000 in damage when he mistook the gas pedal for the brake while trying to pull away from the store, ramming his car through the store’s glass windows.

Fargo firefighter Jared Hoover said the department was called at about 3:34 p.m. Monday to Lotus Blossom Ethnic Asian Grocery at 2750 Main Ave.

Hoover said the driver of the vehicle told fire officials he was leaving the parking lot when he mistook the gas for the brake, crashing his Mitsubishi Diamante through the front windows. It appeared there was no structural damage to the building, he said.

Hoover said a customer, one of about 10 in the store at the time of the crash, suffered a minor injury when she stepped on a piece of broken glass but declined medical attention.

The building’s owner, John Laskey, said one of the owners of the business was standing near the front window of the building and received some bruising on her leg from the vehicle.

“I’m hoping he has insurance on the car,” Laskey said of the driver, adding that he carried insurance on the building and it was not the first time he’d had a car crash into his property over the years.

“When it was icy, I guess – I’ve had people back into poles,” he said.

Fargo police Lt. Joel Vettel said the driver of the vehicle was cited for driving without liability insurance and for failure to keep the vehicle under control.

The driver’s name wasn’t immediately released by police Monday afternoon.
