Ranchers convince ND county to move road over gravesGOLDEN VALLEY, N.D. — A project to upgrade a gravel road in western North Dakota's Mercer County will include moving it away from some unmarked graves.
The County Commission on Tuesday likely is to approve a change to a $900,000 contract it awarded this past spring for the road project. Not only will the road be widened, flattened and straightened as planned, it likely will take a curve to bypass the burials.
The move comes at the request of ranch families in the Golden Valley area who felt the buried homesteaders were being disrespected. Gary Gierke says he doesn't know of any other cemeteries that have vehicles going over the top.
