Letter: Forum improperly used term ‘deaf’

I am curious why the story “Deaf man charged with sexual assault” on the Metro cover of the June 25 Forum included the word “deaf.” How often does The Forum print lead stories with adjectives to describe a person of a disabled community? Regardless of the story itself, we do not see stories lead with everyone’s disability or status of a minority community such as the deaf community.

People stereotype deaf people more than anyone can imagine. Thanks to this story terminology, regardless of the actual story, guilt, etc., people who are deaf in this community and beyond have been set back, once again. As long as we know the person is deaf, now can we know the deaf person afforded equal access, per ADA federal laws, to a sign language interpreter during the arrest? If so, great. If not, let’s hope all parties are on equal footing with their attorneys.
