UND professor: Gay marriage battle far from overFARGO — A University of North Dakota professor says this week's U.S. Supreme Court rulings on same-sex marriage will likely lead to confusion and more legal action.
Justices issued opinions that effectively struck down a provision of a federal law that denies benefits to married gay couples and could clear the way for state laws that recognize marriage equality.
UND political science professor Mark Jendrysik (jen-DRAH'-sek) calls the Supreme Court action a "big thing," but says some people could argue there's still not a clear federal standard.
Jendrysik says it will probably require "another set of court decisions" to determine whether state bans are constitutional.
The professor says the rulings are not likely to sway North Dakotans because the state's strong opposition against gay marriage is based on moral and religious reasons.
