Weather Talk: Average temp for first half of 2013 near 33.3 degrees

As June comes to a close, we mark the end of the first half of the year.

The first six months of 2012 were the warmest on record, with an average temperature of 43.6 degrees. Last year was one of only four years with the average temperature from Jan. 1 through June 30 finishing above 40 degrees. The other three years included 1987, 1931 and 2006.

This year has been a significant reality check as temperatures so far this year are back to the levels we recorded frequently in the past several years, with that huge exception from last year. The average temperature so far this year has been near 33.3 degrees. The first half of 2010 the average was 33.2 degrees, in 2009 it was 32.9 degrees and in 2008 it was 32.6 degrees.

Although these past six months may have been frustrating temperature-wise for many, the first half of the year overall was far closer to the average than perhaps we would like to admit.
