Sewer backup closes Fercho YMCA

FARGO – The Fercho YMCA closed its operations Wednesday after heavy rains Tuesday night caused sewers to back up in the building’s lower level.

It will remain closed and all classes and activities are canceled until Saturday, other than some day camp and child care programs.

The problem was discovered about 2 a.m. Wednesday, and crews worked quickly to address the issue, but about half an inch of water made its way to locker rooms, a fitness center and the YMCA’s two swimming pools, said Paul Finstad, YMCA president.

Finstad said damage to things like Sheetrock and flooring was being evaluated Wednesday.

Finstad said the fitness and workout areas and locker rooms would be closed today and Friday and are expected to be open again Saturday, though he said that schedule is subject to possible changes.

The pools will reopen Monday, according to a Fercho YMCA news release.

In the meantime, Finstad said YMCA members can use the Schlossman Family YMCA, 4243 19th Ave. S., and the Family Wellness facility at 2960 Seter Parkway.

Finstad said the Fercho YMCA building, at 400 1st Ave. S., has experienced sewer backup before, including after a summer storm in 1993.

“It (sewer backup) was more significant back in ’93, because it covered our whole lower level. But this is significant in the sense it affected a number of our key areas,” Finstad said, referring to Wednesday’s incident.

The following programs will be held at the Fercho facility at their regularly scheduled times today and Friday: Child Care (School Age and Early Learning Centers), KinderKamp Preschool, Busy Beaver Camp, Camp Koda day camp, according to the newss release.

The Playstation will not be available for before- and after-program care, the release said.
