Letter: History-making immigration bill

Immigration reform probably has not been on the minds of many North Dakotans given our good relations with our neighbors to the north. However, the bill currently being debated in the U.S. Senate is history in the making.

Bipartisan cooperation in the Senate has led to a major step toward fixing our broken immigration system – and that’s good for all of us. They’re considering a bill that would finally establish a roadmap to citizenship for

11 million hardworking immigrants. The path laid out isn’t easy, and some of the conditions are downright difficult. The bill is a historic opportunity for America to address this difficult issue.

The proposed legislation would fix and modernize our antiquated immigration system in a way that holds everyone accountable – employers, immigrants and government. It is a major step in the right direction.

I would urge our two senators in North Dakota, John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., to support this historic bill. The time is now for real immigration reform.
