Editorial: Funds OK for cities wins rosesPRAIRIE ROSES: To the North Dakota Water Commission for bending its rules just a little to get engineering funds to Valley City, Lisbon and Fort Ransom for much- needed flood protection engineering work. The commissioners voted unanimously last week to release the money to the cities, but not before legitimate questions were raised about setting a precedent by bending the long-standing cost-sharing requirement. In this case, however, the commission agreed with the logic presented by Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who noted that the state-funded outlets at Devils Lake contribute, however minimally, to downstream water elevations. Therefore, the governor said, the state has some responsibility to help protect downstream communities. That makes sense; and it is good news for the affected cities.
LEAFY SPURGE: To Jesse Ventura, former Minnesota governor and sometimes television reality show host, for proceeding with a lawsuit against the widow of murdered Iraq War veteran and author Chris Kyle. Kyle was killed last February at a Texas gun range. Ventura’s defamation lawsuit seeks damages because Kyle says in his book, “American Sniper,” that he once punched Ventura over unpatriotic remarks. Ventura says it never happened. Which leads to the question: Who would you believe? In any case, the lawsuit is typical Ventura bluster and drama. No one should be surprised at the former governor’s boorish behavior. What a jerk.
