Carlson wins rain-shortened NDGA event

FARGO – It wasn’t the way Bill Carlson pictured winning his second golf tournament of the summer, but he can thank Mother Nature for that.

Carlson won the North Dakota Golf Association stroke-play championships on Sunday after the second round was canceled due to excessive rain overnight. His first-round score of 68 earned him the title and $250.

Heavy showers dumped nearly one inch of rain on Oxbow Country Club late Saturday night. Pools of water quickly formed on 10 of the 18 holes and left them unsuitable for play.

The call was made to cancel the tournament and assign places and payouts based on first-round scores.

Rick Kuhn finished one stroke behind the leader and took second place, shooting a 69 on Saturday. Alex Gustafson, Thomas Strandemo and Mason Kennedy finished tied for third with a 70.

Trent Olson was looking forward to playing on Sunday and gaining some ground on the leader, but he never got the chance.

Olson trailed Carlson by three-strokes after the first round, but would end up tied for sixth with Logan Palmer.
