Prisoner caught after attempted escapeRUGBY – A federal prisoner was back in custody Friday after trying to flee the Heart of America Correctional and Treatment Center here.
Wesley E. Brown III, 34, escaped the center around 3:30 p.m., by climbing a fence around the recreation yard, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Orr said in a news release.
Brown was seen running through fields southeast of Rugby not long after he escaped, but muddy conditions made it difficult for officers to close in on him.
Brown briefly wandered into Gun Lake before he surrendered to officers around 6:30 p.m., about four miles south of Rugby just east of Highway 3.
Brown has been at the center since his April arrest on a federal charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
