Smock places third at USA ChampionshipsDES MOINES, Iowa – Amanda Smock had her United States triple jump reign end Thursday.
The former North Dakota State standout placed third in the women’s triple jump at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium.
Smock, the two-time defending American outdoor champion, posted a 45-2¼ jump Thursday.
Andrea Geubelle, from the University of Kansas, won the event with a jump of 46-0½.
Two other athletes with area ties also competed Thursday. Fargo South graduate Laura Roesler finished second in her heat of the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 2.16 seconds to advance to the semifinals in that event. The 800 semis are set for 8:08 tonight. Roesler, who runs at the University of Oregon, was one of 16 athletes to make the semifinals.
Gabriele Anderson, from Perham, Minn., won her heat in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 11.55 seconds. Anderson advanced to Saturday’s 1,500 final, which is scheduled for 4:46 p.m. Anderson was one of 12 athletes to make the finals.
