Letter to the editor: Bike doofus crowd plays with death

Since the weather has turned warmer, and a lot drier, more bike riders are out and about. However, how long they are out and about is open to debate. Because of their very stupid actions, I have had to take evasive actions to avoid hitting them.

In Moorhead, I keep meeting adults riding against the traffic as I meet automotive traffic driving the correct direction. If I move to the left, I hit a car, and if I continue straight ahead, I wipe out some bikers. That’s a heck of a situation to be put in, but sometimes you just can’t fix stupid. At the post office and library, I had to slam on the brakes to avoid potential roadkill as they went across Fifth Street without stopping or looking either way. I’m not sure why there is such a strong death wish over here.

Fargo hasn’t been much better when it comes to the two-wheeled doofus crowd. When there are bike lanes, why are bikers on the sidewalks? Why are they cutting through traffic, running red lights and, in general, endangering themselves and everyone around them? I think it must be that downtown death wish.

I am all in favor of using bicycles, but I am also in favor of using them safely. Maybe a driver’s license with a bicycle endorsement should be required to use a bike in our area. Not all bikers are bad or irresponsible people. They try to follow the rules of the road and have fun, but there are some who seem intent on giving those people a bad name and image.

Maybe the police need to get more involved in this area. Something needs to be done before someone gets killed.
