Setting The Stage: Island Park theater presents shows for the ages

FARGO – It’s heating up outside and inside, at least at The Stage at Island Park.

The theater welcomes a pair of performances this weekend to warm the hearts of adults and children alike.

First up is Rachel Izen, a veteran of both the West End and Broadway, playing Mrs. Brill in “Mary Poppins” in the latter, which led to a national tour in the same role.

The actress also played Miss Flannery in “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” which led to an invitation for her to work with the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre students in “Thoroughly Modern Millie Junior,” which opens next weekend.

Izen shows her range at 7:30 tonight with, “Brits on Broadway,” a collection of tunes written by English composers and lyricists or set in the old country.

Izen, with the help of local singers Charlie Phillips, Aaron Baker, Crystal Cossette, Scott M Brusven, Emily Olig and Sam Krauth, performs show tunes from “Oliver,” “Sweeney Todd” and, of course, “Mary Poppins.”

A much younger generation of talent takes over the stage this Friday and Saturday.

In “Winnie the Pooh Kids” the elementary school actors in FMCT’s Discovering Theatre Program get a taste for the spotlight, just as the lovable stuffed bear tries to get a taste for honey.

This session of “Winnie the Pooh Kids” takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. A second session with all different participants hits the stage July 12 and 13.
