Bismarck woman pleads not guilty to child neglect

BISMARCK — A Bismarck woman accused of leaving four children home alone in an apartment where a fire started in an oven has pleaded not guilty to abuse or neglect of a child.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/11J6Sza ) that 30-year-old Viola Grinnell could face up to five years in prison if convicted on the felony charge.

Emergency officials who responded to Grinnell's apartment the night of May 11 say they found the children and a large amount of smoke. They determined the smoke was coming from burned pot holders in the oven and a stove burner that had been left on.

The children range in age from 2 to 10.
