Drunken man nearly hit by train at Main Ave. intersection

FARGO – BNSF Railway conductors had a scare Monday morning after barely missing a man who managed to roll off the train tracks he was sitting on in time to miss the oncoming train, police said.

Deputy Chief Pat Claus said police were called to the 1700 block of Main Avenue about 9:13 a.m. on a report of a man who’d been hit by a train.

Officers found the man on the north side of the train tracks with just some small scratches on his arm.

BNSF personnel said they had just started the train when they saw the man sitting on the tracks. They sounded the horn, and when the man didn’t move, hit the emergency brake.

Witnesses told police the man rolled down the embankment, and conductors said he was not hit.

The 55-year-old man was taken to detox, as a preliminary breath test put his blood alcohol content at 0.30 percent, Claus said. The man may face trespassing charges.
