Letter: Forum wrong to publish letter

It saddens me that I live in a world where a deeply offensive letter announcing Jim Ebsen’s bigotry with pride would be considered appropriate for publication (June 14).

Ebsen would be well advised to read the American Psychological Association’s current official line on homosexuality: “Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience.”

The APA is currently more concerned with the mental health of homosexuals who are subjected to the vile prejudices they encounter in our society, which can clearly be found in our local newspapers too.

As I understand it, the logic in Ebsen’s letter appears to be: 1) Homosexuals have different sexual preferences to Ebsen. 2) People with different sexual preferences to Ebsen’s are “deviant, perverted and repulsive.” 3) Pedophiles are also “deviant, perverted and repulsive,” ergo homosexuality is just like pedophilia.

The logic is flawed, has no scientific foundations, and by printing it and giving this cretinous voice a platform, The Forum has done a disservice to the gay members of our community and their straight allies.

Ebsen is right about one thing however: He is indeed more aptly described as a “homo repulsive” than a homophobe.

I assume The Forum has some standards of decency when choosing what letters to the editor are appropriate for publication.
