Man sentenced to 33 months for assault on brother

FARGO, N.D. — A North Dakota man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for hitting his older brother in the head with a sledgehammer.

Joey Short, of Belcourt, pleaded guilty in March to a federal charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.

The incident occurred in October 2012. Authorities say the 24-year-old Short struck 33-year-old Jason Short in the head numerous times.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced Short to 33 months in prison and ordered him to pay more than $3,600 in medical costs.

Investigators say Jason Short required numerous stitches. He was treated and released at a Belcourt hospital.
