Quinlan, Post 2 score shutout of Blues

FARGO – Fargo Post 2 kicked off the Joe Parmer Red River Diamond Classic American Legion baseball tournament on a high note Friday.

Lefty Casey Quinlan pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 12 to lead Post 2 to a 9-0 win over Moorhead at Jack Williams Stadium.

“It’s good to start out with a win,” Quinlan said. “When the ball got hit, they made the plays behind me, and that makes my life a lot easier knowing I’ve got a defense behind me.”

Quinlan gave up a double to Michael Weismann in the first inning and a single to Austin Skjefte in the second. He struck out nine of the next 17 batters before giving up his last hit to Drew Anderson in the sixth.

Post 2 took an early lead when right fielder Aaron Green drove in second baseman Ryan Smith on a ground out to second for a one-run advantage. Joe Hallock’s one-run single in the third would stretch the lead to two runs.

But despite Quinlan laying the foundation for a solid defensive game, two runs weren’t enough in the eyes of head coach Luke Rustad.

“I just said, ‘We have enough talent out here that Casey shouldn’t have to be pitching these 1-0, 2-0 games, so let’s get out there and start hitting the ball,’ ” Rustad said.

And his team listened.

Smith and Seth Amundson had back-to-back run-scoring singles in the fourth to total five Post 2 hits and score five runs in the fourth inning. Smith’s single to right scored shortstop Seth Tollefson and Amundson drove in Smith for his second run of the game.

Smith led Post 2 with three hits, one RBI and three runs scored. Amundson collected two singles and also scored three runs and finished with one RBI.

“Once we hear Casey’s pitching, we get pumped up,” Smith said. “When he’s on the mound we come with more energy. He gives us a shot every time and we want to give him some run support.”

The Blues stranded seven runners on base, only two of which made it into scoring position. They committed five errors.

Moorhead defeated Bismarck 6-1 in earlier play Friday behind six innings of one-hit ball pitched by Derek Jorgenson.

The Joe Parmer Classic continues today with the Blues playing Detroit Lakes at 11:30 a.m. and Post 2 squaring off against Aberdeen, S.D. at 4:30 p.m.
