Moorhead man indicted on federal charges in check thefts

MINNEAPOLIS – A Moorhead man was indicted here on federal charges that accuse him of stealing checks from the mail in central Minnesota last fall.

On Monday, a federal grand jury indicted Justin Lee Feldt, 32, on eight charges of felony bank fraud and identity theft.

Feldt is accused of stealing mail containing blank credit card “cash advance checks” totaling more than $22,000 around October. He then altered the checks to make them payable to himself, according to the indictment.

Feldt deposited the money in a bank and later withdrew it, court documents say. On two occasions, Feldt is accused of using the identity of two out-of-state victims to cash the checks, the indictment said.

The United States Postal Inspection Service and the Otter Tail, Crow Wing, Pine and Scott County sheriff’s offices began investigating the case late last year.
