Fargo teenager charged with driving on West Fargo diversion

WEST FARGO — A Fargo teenager was cited here Sunday for mudding on the banks of the flood control diversion, which authorities said caused $2,200 in damages.

Joel Scheving, 18, was driving his truck through open fields about 1:30 p.m. when he lost control and got stuck on the west bank of the West Fargo-Horace Diversion north of 21st Avenue West, according to a news release from Mike Reitan, assistant police chief in West Fargo.

Driving on the banks of the diversion, an area that is off-limits to vehicles, could create ruts or cause erosion that weakens the embankment, according to Chris Brungardt, assistant director of public works in West Fargo.

Scheving may be held liable for the damages, police said in the news release.

In addition to the damage caused, mudding in that area was dangerous because of high water on the diversion at the time, Brungardt said in the news release.

Scheving is charged in West Fargo Municipal Court with driving on flood protection, a Class B misdemeanor. The case is still pending.
