Artists have skin in game with new tattoo studio

FARGO – No Coast Tattoo opened a month ago in the downtown storefront that for a long time was home to an ice cream parlor.

No Coast co-owner Tim Lund said it’s heartbreaking when families show up at their door and the kids find out the hard truth: There’s no ice cream.

On the other hand, Lund is happy to provide an ice cream tattoo, or any other kind of tattoo for that matter, to anyone 18 and older.

While certain images tend to be in demand, Lund and co-owners Brice Schneider and Noah Kilsdonk favor originality over conformity.

“We try to always talk somebody into getting something unique,” Lund said.

“We have no problem letting them know: ‘Hey, we’ve tattooed this a dozen times. We can take that same idea and draw it up custom.’

“That’s what we’d rather do,” Lund said, “but ultimately we’ll do whatever the client wants.”

All three artists got their start working in the Fargo area for other tattoo businesses.

They had been looking to open their own studio for a long time when the storefront at 515 3rd Ave. N. came up for rent.

When it did, they knew it was the right place and the right time to launch their own parlor.

“We love it,” Lund said. “We’re trying to go for a studio feel. Big open area, lots of light.”

He said many of their regulars have followed them.

“A lot of people, they come back over and over, whether they’re getting one piece that’s several sessions’ worth of work or lots of small ones,” Lund said.

They chose the name No Coast to set them apart, as the tattoo culture already has “a big East Coast/West Coast thing,” Lund said.

Schneider said many people dream of being their own boss, so when an opportunity arose, they figured they’d take it.

Now they have skin in the game and still love doing what they do, Schneider said.

“We get to draw for a living,” he said. “It’s hard to complain.”
