Attempted bank robbery prompts town evacuationSTILLWATER, Minn. – A man whose alleged bomb threat prompted a five-hour evacuation of parts of downtown Stillwater has been arrested.
The FBI, county and city authorities shut down about six downtown blocks Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to about 3 p.m. as a precaution.
They say a man walked into the U.S. Bank downtown and handed the teller a note saying he had a bomb and he wanted money. A police report says he then set a briefcase on the bank manager’s desk and fled.
He was arrested two blocks away as he tried to get into his pickup truck.
Police kept the area evacuated until they could determine the device was fake.
The suspect was in Washington County jail on Saturday. He could face felony charges as soon as Monday.
