Fire destroys units at North Shore resort

TOFTE, Minn. – Firefighters from much of Minnesota’s North Shore were battling a fire that destroyed several units and forced evacuations Saturday at the Bluefin Bay Resort here.

The fire had destroyed five units and was threatening five others Saturday evening. Two buildings – each housing 40 to 50 people – were evacuated as a precaution, resort general manager Dennis Rysdahl said. There have been no reports of injuries.

Smoke was billowing across Minnesota Highway 61, which remained open, though it had been reduced to one lane at times.

Bluefin Bay is located along the Lake Superior shore about 80 miles northeast of Duluth.

Rysdahl would not speculate on a possible cause of the fire, and there was no word from fire officials who were busy battling the fire.
