Spuds 3,200 boys, girls relay teams break school record at state track

ST. PAUL – Moorhead assistant track and field coach and head cross country coach Jeremy Blake took a picture of the Moorhead track record board before leaving for the Minnesota Class 2A state track and field meet at Hamline University.

A little cocky perhaps, but he was right to have it with him. The Moorhead girls and boys 3,200-meter relays changed the Spuds’ record books at the state meet Saturday.

“In order for a (3,200-meter relay team) to break a record like that, you need all four,” Blake said. “If you don’t have one, then it’s not going to work out. Today was their day, and it was really fun to watch.”

Off the track, Avery Selberg, Mallori Johnson, Mackenzie Kelly and Taylor Janssen needed each other, whether it was to pick up Janssen off the ground after she legged out the final sprint or to hug one another after tears of joy came pouring down. On the track, the four finished third in the state with a time of 9 minutes, 16.60 seconds, nearly 15 seconds better than their personal best and nearly nine seconds better than the Moorhead record of 9:25.41.

There was one thing missing that the girls found Saturday.

“We just believed today,” said Janssen after her final race with the Spuds. “I was excited with the position my team put me in, and I was just hoping for a good time. We really wanted it today. It was a good way to finish the season.”

On the boys side, brothers Matt and Luke Lillehaugen, Ezra Olson and Josh Young combined for sixth place in the state with a time of 7:58.15, breaking the Moorhead record of 8:00.20 and topping their qualifying time by more than seven seconds.

“Everyone ran a really good race to set me up to break it,” said Young about closing out the race. “I tried to bring it home with the kick. I tried to make the most of it.”

Blake had his questions about Young coming into the race, but, as he said, it took all four.

“This morning I wasn’t sure about Young,” Blake said. “He was really quiet, and I wasn’t sure if he’d be on today. He finished well, and if he had not done that, we probably wouldn’t have broken the school record. It takes all four.”

Johnson closed out the day for Moorhead, finishing sixth in the 300 hurdles in her first individual race at state. Last season, Johnson didn’t even get a chance to qualify, spraining her left ankle the day before the section meet. Only a sophomore, Johnson now has a foundation from which to build.

“I’m really happy because I wasn’t able to make it to state last year,” Johnson said. “I was a lot healthier this year. I didn’t really have any expectations this year, but next year I’ll have higher expectations after this. It’s exciting.”

Detroit Lakes had a pair of top 10-finishes, as Shay Nielsen finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 5 inches. The Lakers’ girls 800 relay team of Abbie Kay Johnson, Kyley Foster, Allison Berg and Lindsey Heinecke finished seventh at 1:44.85.
