Wahpeton man arrested after vandalism spreeWAHPETON, N.D. – A 19-year-old Wahpeton man is in custody after police say he went on a vandalism spree here Thursday night.
The Wahpeton Police Department was flooded with 21 reports of car break-ins, slashed tires, and even two car fires.
It adds to an unusual rash of crimes for the city.
The charred and burned remains of a vehicle are evidence of a late-night crime spree in Wahpeton.
Many other car owners woke up to slashed tires and break-ins.
“It’s been kind of different. I get the paper at home and we’ve been reading the articles. You sometimes wonder what possesses people to do things like this, some of the senseless crimes,” said Jay Kruger, of Wahpeton.
This latest spree adds to a recent rash of crimes, unusual for the area. In May, two armed men robbed a Tesoro north of town, pulling the cashier’s hair and forcing her to open the register.
And just last week, a man attacked a female employee at a Family Dollar store with a pair of scissors.
The 19-year-old suspect arrested Friday will likely face charges including unlawful entry and endangerment by fire.
Authorities are withholding his name until those charges are formally filed.
