HUNTER, N.D. – The Northern Cass School Board is nearing a decision on the district’s next superintendent.

The board and staff interviewed the second of the two remaining finalists for the job Friday, board President Bart Marvel said.

The seven-member board began debating the choice in a special meeting after the interviews at the school. Results of the meeting were not available as of press time.

Chris Swenson, superintendent of the Wyndmere School District was interviewed Friday.

Northern Cass High School Principal Ryan Lyson, interviewed on Wednesday, Marvel said.

A third finalist, Terry Baesler, principal of Hillsboro High School, opted to pull out of consideration.

From 2003 to 2005, he was a graduate assistant at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in media relations and athletic administration.

He began his education career as a business teacher at Fertile-Beltrami (Minn.) High School serving from 2000 to 2003

Swenson has a bachelor’s degree in business education from Concordia College and a master’s degree in educational leadership from UND. He is in a doctoral program at UND.

Lyson has spent much of his career as a high school math teacher, starting in Aberdeen (S.D.) School District (1999-2000), followed by Moorhead School District (2000-2010) and most recently in Northern Cass.

He has been high school principal at Northern Cass for the last year.

Lyson has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Dickinson State University and a master’s in secondary mathematics from Minot State University.

The district considered 14 applications for the post, with the applicants serving as superintendents, administrators, teachers or principals in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming or Montana.

Northern Cass Superintendent Allen Burgad was named in early May to be assistant superintendent of secondary curriculum and instruction for the West Fargo School District.

Burgad takes over the new post July 1. He has led the Northern Cass School District since 2004.
