Park Christian's Moberg takes second in the Class 1A triple jump

ST. PAUL – Six days before Moorhead Park Christian’s Matt Moberg was jumping a personal best in the boys triple jump at the Minnesota Class 1A state track and field meet, he was puking.

Thanks to a 24-hour stomach bug, from 2 a.m. until 6 a.m. the morning of his section meet, he threw up five times. His mom gave him the option of staying home, but he said he wanted to go to state.

Good thing he did. He won section championships last week in the long jump and triple jump, puking before the triple jump. On Friday, less than 24 hours after he fully got his energy back, Moberg finished second in the state at the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 44 feet at Hamline University.

“The last week I’ve pretty much done nothing,” Moberg said. “I ran two laps on Tuesday and I just couldn’t do it. (Thursday) was about when I started getting my energy back. It was a 24-hour stomach bug, but it took a week’s worth of energy from me.”

Moberg came in as the eighth seed in the triple jump and turned some heads. Apparently, no one knew his seeding mark happened on a day he couldn’t hold down a glass of water.

“People didn’t think to worry about me, but then I popped off the big one and it turned heads,” Moberg said.

Moberg comes into today’s long jump ranked second to last. He’s hoping for a repeat of Friday’s head-turning.

“I’m hoping to do the same thing,” Moberg said. “Coming in tomorrow, there’s no real pressure, so we’ll see what I can do.”

Ottertail Central’s Petric VanErp wasn’t just jumping in the boys triple jump, but also between events. In between taking fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 42-8, VanErp was helping Ottertail Central’s 800-meter relay make it to the finals, which will take place today.

“It was overall a good day,” VanErp said. “I still have the long jump. I’m going in ranked second, but that doesn’t mean anything. All that matters is what you do on the day of. I’m really excited with the fifth-place finish though.”

Ottertail’s Steffan Stroh took seventh in the boys shot put (49 feet, 7 ¼ inches), Norman County’s Miki Lee took seventh in the girls high jump (5-02), and Perham’s Miranda Lockhart took seventh in the girls discus (112-11).

After a second-place finish last year at state in the shot put, Stroh didn’t see it as lucky and is focused on completely forgetting it in order to defend his discus title today.

“I knew today would be tough,” Stroh said. “It just didn’t click for me. I have to forget today and work on tomorrow. All I got in mind is the discus. It could have really been any of us. That’s the way it goes sometimes, but I guess you can’t complain about placing in the state. I’m going to do my best to focus on forgetting today and focus on tomorrow.”
