Dog shot during search warrant in Bismarck dies

BISMARCK — Bismarck police say a dog shot by an officer during a search warrant has died.

The Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/114AuYS ) reports that officers were serving the warrant at a home Thursday morning.

Steve Raywalt, the uncle of the dog's owner, says officers opened the screen door and yelled that they had a warrant. He says he tried to hold back the 6-year-old pit bull named Bela Lugosi, but the dog attacked and bit an officer.

Bismarck Police Officer Pat Renz says two officers then shot the dog. The dog died overnight from its injuries.

The department is investigating the incident.

Raywalt says he did everything he could to try to restrain the dog.
