Kindred's Laura Podolak signs to play golf at UND

FARGO – Laura Podolak from Oxbow, N.D., is continuing her family’s tradition of playing Division I golf.

Podolak, who graduated from Kindred (N.D.) High School this spring, officially signed a national letter of intent this week to continue her golfing career at the University of North Dakota.

“I took my time deciding and made sure it was something I really wanted to do,” Podolak said. “I choose to go to UND, and it was something my family really encouraged and supported me to do.”

Podolak capped her senior year winning her second straight individual North Dakota Class B

state championship this spring.

The Vikings standout shot a two-day 161 to become the first back-to-back medalist since Watford City’s Paige Anderson won titles in 2007 and 2008.

She also helped Kindred win back-to-back team championships.

Her father and coach, Mike Podolak, played golf at Southern Methodist University (Texas). Her sister Kate Podolak played golf at UND for two seasons

“Laura is excited and she understands college golf is going to be a big step,” Mike Podolak said. “It’s a different commitment, different time frame, but I think she is ready for that. She is ready to get better. Taking that next step is all about spending more time around the game.”

Laura Podolak said her sister’s experience playing golf at UND helped her make her decision.

“I’m really excited,” Laura Podolak said. “It’s going to be a lot tougher competition so I’m going to have to practice hard and stay focused.”

Podolak also played volleyball and basketball at Kindred. She was a part of Kindred’s state championship volleyball team last fall and earned a total of 13 varsity letters competing for the Vikings.
