Winona County to vote on first frack sand mineWINONA, Minn. — Winona County commissioners are set to vote on the first frack sand mine in the county.
The initial application for the 20-acre mine in Saratoga Township was denied after the county imposed a moratorium on frack sand mining in 2012. A second application was submitted after the moratorium expired.
County commissioners voted in April to pass on an intensive environmental review sought by some residents. The Winona Daily News (http://bit.ly/1331Kbt ) says that vote came after the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Minnesota Department of Health called for the project to be added to a more sweeping environmental review of several mines in both Winona and Fillmore counties.
The commissioners' vote on the project is expected Tuesday.
