Lind: Was deceased Hollywood publicist born in Fargo?
That question was raised by Larry Aasen, formerly of Hillsboro, N.D., and now of Westport, Conn.
Larry was sure Dale was from Hillsboro, although he questioned the Times’ geographical designation of Hillsboro being “outside of Fargo.”
Anyhow, Larry’s inquiry led Mike “Dino” Peterson, formerly of Fargo and Amenia, N.D., and now of Las Vegas, to swing into action. Dino hit the Internet and came up with items about Dale … one of which is a tad strange.
First of all, Dino found items that said this Dale was born in Fargo, lived in Oregon as a teenager, then moved to Los Angeles when he was 18.
But there are other Dale Olsons. In the 1940 census, Dino found a Dale S. Olson who was born about 1935 and lived in Bowman, N.D.
Then there was Dale C. Olson, who was born about 1934 and lived in Valley City, N.D., according to the 1940 census. His parents, listed in the 1930 census, lived in Spring Creek in Barnes County.
Finally, there’s the Hollywood publicist Dale Olson’s obituary in the Hollywood Reporter that said Dale was born in Fargo Feb. 30, 1934. Feb. 30?
“If they can report that date,” Dino observes, “can we believe Fargo?”
Good question, Dino.
