Weather Talk: Rainfall puts final finish to the drought of 2012

Just a couple of weeks ago, many people were talking about how our snowy winter had turned into a dry spring. Well, it wasn’t dry for long.

The official rain total at Hector International Airport on Wednesday and Thursday was 4.64 inches. In the 12-day period ending Thursday, rainfall was 6.88 inches.

Total rain for May was 7.17 inches, which is the fourth wettest since 1881. Total precipitation for the year to date (including rain and melted snow) is now almost 13 inches, which is almost double the average to date.

The drought of 2012 is now a done deal. Looking back, the heavy snows of February were the beginning of the end of the drought, but the rainfall over the past two weeks has finished it off.
