Park Christian's Moberg qualifies for Minnesota state track and field meet

MAHNOMEN, Minn. – After puking five times between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday morning, Moorhead Park Christian junior Matt Moberg rolled over in bed and answered with six words when his mom told him he didn’t have to go to the Minnesota Class 1A, Section 8 track meet at Mahnomen on Saturday:

“I want to go to state.”

In between naps in the Mahnomen gym that felt like a sauna compared to the bitter conditions outside, Moberg won section championships in the long jump and the triple jump Saturday with jumps of 19 feet, 11¼ inches and 42-4½, respectively. The triple jump didn’t sit too well with Moberg, as he vomited 15 minutes before winning it.

“I wanted to go to state,” Moberg said. “This year and next year is all I got left. I figured I’d go for it. I had to give it a shot. I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity.”

Moberg wasn’t the only athlete going to great lengths to compete for a trip to the state meet Saturday.

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton senior Mandy Mercil knew she had to be crazy when she decided to do pole vault in seventh grade. Mainly, because her coach told her.

“My coach said if you want to do pole vault, you have to be crazy, because you’re throwing yourself in the air with a pole,” Mercil said.

Apparently, craziness runs in the family. Mandy is the second Mercil to take on the pole vault after her older brother Bennett also did. The Mercils aren’t done when Mandy graduates either. The youngest of the family, Frannie, a sophomore at D-G-F, finished in a tie for fifth at the section meet in the pole vault.

“It’s kind of something everyone in my family does,” Mandy said. “I try not to think when I’m doing it, because when I start to think is when I screw up.”

Mercil must not have been thinking Saturday, as she cleared 9 feet to take home the section title in the pole vault and head back to the state meet, where she finished 10th last season. Mercil also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 35-10¼ to qualify for state. The state meet will be the three-sport senior’s last hurrah.

“I know what I have to do to place, and I’ve been there,” Mandy said. “This is my last thing as a Rebel.”

While Mercil’s career is coming to an end, Park Rapids Area’s Megan Grimes’ career is just getting warmed up.

After being part of the Panthers’ 800-meter relay team that finished ninth and their 1,600-meter relay team that finished sixth, to go along with a 13th-place finish in the high jump, at state last year, Grimes is back.

The sophomore won the section title in the 100-meter hurdles and was part of the Panthers’ 800- and 1,600-meter relays that took home section championships Saturday. The sophomore has no preference whether she’s winning with a relay or individually. Either way, it helped Park Rapids Area capture the girls section championship with 44 more points than any team Saturday.

“When I do it by myself, I know it’s all on me, but when I’m with the team, I know I have to do it for the team,” Grimes said. “We set our goals so high, so it helps having a relay to guide you.”

Grimes has been running track since fifth grade and sees goals beyond the finish line.

“I’ve always loved it,” Grimes said. “I always have a goal I want to get to when I’m running. My goal is to get school records and hopefully run in college. I have to push harder.”
