Flash flood brings surprising fish

WEST FARGO – When Leon Johnson arrived at his job at Crary Industries here Thursday morning, he started snapping pictures of the artificial lake that heavy rains had created outside the usually landlocked business.

In addition to the large body of water, Johnson was taken aback by something else as well – the lake contained fish.

Johnson documented his find with photos, but he’s not sure how the fish got there, as the business, located at 237 12th St. N.W., is not close to either the Sheyenne River or the Red River.

Johnson’s theory is the fish, which he figured were suckers or carp, may have come from the Sheyenne River via a drainage ditch that was filled with water Thursday morning.

The lake lasted just a few hours, according to Johnson, who said that as floodwaters receded and drained into the storm sewer system, it appeared the fish went with them.
