Podolak paces Kindred to Class B state girls golf title

BISMARCK – Laura Podolak had some struggles Wednesday during the final round of the North Dakota Class B state girls golf meet.

However, it was not enough to deny the Kindred senior her second consecutive state championship.

Podolak carried an eight-stroke lead into the final day at Bismarck’s Tom O’Leary Golf Course and then held off Larimore’s Haily Abel for a two-stroke victory.

Podolak finished with a two-day total of 161 after carding an 85 on Wednesday. Abel had a second-round score of 79 – the best of the day – and wound up with 163 strokes.

Callie Carlson of Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood took third with a 169, and Mikaela Casey of Kindred was fourth at 172.

Podolak, who was named the Class B girls senior athlete of the year, saw her lead shrink to two strokes with two stops left on the course. Nothing changed as both Podolak and Abel parred No. 17 and bogeyed No. 18.

“It was getting really scary toward the end, but I managed to hang on,” Podolak said. “Haily played well today and really cut into my lead. I didn’t like the way I played, and I think a lot of it was nerves again. Fortunately I was able to finish well.”

Podolak led the Vikings to their second consecutive team championship. Kindred compiled a two-day total of 709 and outdistanced second-place Hazen by a whopping 39 strokes. The Vikings held a 31-stroke lead after the first round.

“I’m definitely more excited about the team championship than anything individual,” Podolak said. “We felt going into the year that we had a good chance to repeat, because we returned most of our top players. But because of the weather and all, we weren’t able to play in a lot of tournaments. We played in only three tournaments before state. The west teams played in more, so we were a little concerned this week. But everything came together for us. We played really well both days.”

Lexi Piatz and Savanna Nesemeier carded a 93 and a 94, respectively, to complete Kindred’s second-round score of 357. That was five strokes higher than its first-round total.

Kindred’s Mike Podolak earned coach of the year honors.

Hazen shaved 18 strokes from its first-round score, finishing the day with a 365. Silverthorn posted the third-best score of the day, an 82. Rachael Hansana, Baylee Fitzgerald and Kayla Lindquist contributed scores of 92, 95 and 96, respectively.

The Bison shot 25 strokes better on the back nine than they did on the front.

“We tend to finish strong,” Hazen coach Kathy Berglund said. “For a time we thought we might not hold on to second place, but the girls responded with a great finish. We finished second and we’re excited about that. With Kindred being so good, everybody was playing for second. We’re the ones that got it, and it was a strong second-place finish.”

It was Hazen’s eighth state runner-up finish under Berglund, who has guided the Bison to seven state championships.

Napoleon placed third with a 796. Beulah (808) and North Star (810) rounded out the top five.
