Grand Forks Central's Kennedy wins East Region boys golf meet
HANKINSON, N.D. – Despite the weather being less than favorable, Grand Forks Central senior Ty Kennedy kept his focus and shot his best round of the season Wednesday.
Kennedy shot a 70 – six strokes under his average – to finish 2-under par and win the North Dakota East Region tournament at Dakota Winds Golf Course in Hankinson.
Kennedy’s closest competition was Fargo Shanley’s Grady Meyer and Tanner Kretchman of Fargo Davies. Meyer took second place with a 75 and Kretchman finished third with a 76.
“It’s definitely rewarding,” Kennedy said. “My game wasn’t so great at the beginning part of the year, but we put a lot of time in this spring and just fixed it with practice.”
Kennedy bogeyed only three holes, had three birdies and eagled the seventh hole, a 537-yard par 5.
On No. 7, Kennedy’s tee shot landed 170 yards from the pin. Then with an 8-iron in hand, he landed his approach within 10 feet of the cup and made the easy putt for eagle to close out the front nine with a 34.
“I tried to hit something a little lower, more controlled to get to that back-left pin position,” Kennedy said. “It kicked off the green to the left and it was a straight-on putt. And I made it.”
Back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15 would set Kennedy up to par the last three holes and finish the back nine even at 36.
Kretchman was the Eagles’ lowest scorer and boosted Davies to a first-place finish in the team competition.
Senior Trevor Swangler shot a 79 for the Eagles and Sam Hendricks and Bryan Pallen each added an 80 to win the East Region team title with a 315.
“We had four guys that shot right around 80, which is a good score out here today,” Eagles head coach Steve Kennedy said. “We’ve been up and down all year. Today was just a good day for us and fortunately for us there are six, seven teams in the East that can win on a given day and it was just our turn today.”
Barret Eickhof shot a 79 to help Grand Forks Red River to a second-place finish with a 322 and Meyer’s 75 helped the Deacons to a third-place finish, also with a 322.
The Class A state tournament will take place in Hankinson at the Dakota Winds Golf Course starting Monday with tee-off at 9 a.m.
