Police investigate robbery, shooting in south Fargo

FARGO – Police say a man was shot in the leg in a robbery behind a south Fargo convenience store Wednesday afternoon.

Fargo police Sgt. Chris Helmick said the gunshot victim, whom police have not identified, was in a parking lot behind the Loaf ’N Jug convenience store at 1833 S. University Drive when he was approached by two black males asking to bum a cigarette about 4:30 p.m.

The shooting victim told police one of the men shot him in the leg with a small-caliber pistol as they were taking his wallet and cellphone, Helmick said.

The wound isn’t expected to be life-threatening. The victim was taken to Essentia Health.

Police took an initial but unconfirmed report that the suspects left in a blue Chevy Tahoe, Helmick said.

Authorities planned to release a more detailed description of the suspects later Wednesday night, he said.

Officers continued to work the scene more than an hour after the robbery, reaching out to potential witnesses. Helmick said the area was heavily frequented by workers at the Essentia Health clinic on South University Drive, who often park in that parking lot.

“It’s very unusual circumstances to have it happen this early in the day in a heavily traveled parking lot,” he said.

The shooting victim called police at 4:57 p.m. from a trailer home in the 600 block of Countryside Trailer Court South, just east of 25th Street between Fifth and Seventh avenues south, Deputy Police Chief Pat Claus said.

He told police his friends had given him a ride to the trailer following the shooting, Claus said.
