Kindred boys lead team race after first day of Class B golf tournament

MANDAN, N.D. – Nick Myhre has been in this situation before.

Last year, the Northern Lights golfer held a two-stroke lead heading into the second and final round of the North Dakota Class B state boys golf tournament.

On Tuesday, the junior shot an even-par 72 on Mandan’s Prairie West Golf Course and will carry a one-stroke lead into today’s final round.

Myhre, who wound up finishing second to Kindred’s David Talley in last year’s state tournament, is determined to stay atop the leaderboard this time.

“I’m going to try my best. It’s going to be tough, but I know I’m capable of doing it,” Myhre said. “Last year I wasn’t mentally ready. The guy who beat me was a senior and more experienced in state tournaments. Now I think I’m mentally tougher.”

Defending state champion Kindred owns a four-stroke lead over Central Cass in the team race. The Vikings totaled 329 strokes on Tuesday, with Blake Anderson leading the way. Austin Pulczinski (82), Cody Pulczinski (83) and Ian Anderson (88) rounded out Kindred’s first-round score.

Cody Pulczinski, Blake Anderson and Ian Anderson finished fifth, eighth and 10th, respectively, in last year’s state tournament.

“We have three guys who have been through it before. They know what it takes,” Kindred coach Perry Piatz said. “We rely heavily on our top four guys. They’ve been getting it done all year, and they got it done today. We have to keep grinding it out. We have to stay focused on what we need to do, not what everybody else is doing.”

Dickinson Trinity (337) is in third place, South Border (340) and Beulah (340) are tied for fourth and Fargo Oak Grove (341) is sixth.
