Kindred leads after first day of Class B girls state golf tourney

BISMARCK – Laura Podolak got off to a rocky start Tuesday on the first day of the North Dakota Class B state girls golf tournament.

The defending state champion then had a word with her father, Kindred coach Mike Podolak, and took a deep breath and calmed herself down.

From there, it was smooth sailing for the Kindred senior.

Podolak was 4-over par after three holes at Bismarck’s Tom O’Leary Golf Course, but was 3-over the rest of the way, finishing the day atop the leaderboard with a 76. She holds an eight-stroke lead over second-place Hailey Abel of Larimore heading into today’s second and final round.

Podolak opened with a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-69 course. After that, she parred 10 holes and birdied No. 18.

“I was really nervous at the start. I wasn’t myself,” Podolak said. “I talked to my dad and he told me to take some deep breaths, try to calm down and just focus on golf. It took a little time, but I found my groove.”

Podolak had a shaky first round last year, shooting an 11-over 83. She trailed the leader by two strokes. However, she bounced back in the second round with a sparkling even-par 72 to take medalist honors by five strokes.

“For a time, I thought I was going to finish somewhere in the 80s again, but it turned out to be a good day,” Podolak said. “Last year, I went into the second day chasing someone. This time I’m going in with a big lead. What I have to do now is stay focused and play my game. This is a tricky course and anything can happen.”

Podolak led a strong first-round showing by the defending state champion Vikings, who hold a commanding 31-stroke lead over second-place Hazen. Kindred has 352 strokes and three of the top four scorers in the individual standings – Podolak first, Mikaela Casey third with an 87, and Savanna Nesemeier fourth with an 88. Both Casey and Nesemeier placed in the top 10 last year.

Lexi Piatz rounded out Kindred’s first-round score with a 101.

Podolak, Casey and Nesemeier led the way last year when the Vikings compiled a 321 on the second day to turn a five-stroke lead into a 37-stroke victory.

“We led after the first round last year, but not by much. The next day we played great golf,” Podolak said. “It’s nice to have such a big lead. It gives us confidence going into the next round. Now we have to finish strong.”
