Letter: Put meaning back in Memorial Day

It’s time that the American public takes back days such as Memorial Day for what they were created for. Memorial Day is not for shopping or playing. It is for remembering why we are able to have an opinion, eat what we want, travel where we want and, quite frankly, speak English.

I think too much time has passed and the losses and sacrifices of our servicemen and women in the past and present have been taken for granted. I mean too much time has passed since a generation or two as a whole had to make sacrifices either at home or abroad. But as with all holidays, it has been run over by pleasure and greed.

I think it’s time we start taking back some of the values that have been lost.
